You absolutely must get this down cold in order to progress and win games.
The protoss tech tree is not difficult to master. It just takes time and practice.
One of the best ways to learn your protoss tech tree is to choose a simple strategy and learn it inside and out.
The cannon rush is a very easy to master tactic and it has the added benefit of being one of the deadliest strategies in the game if performed correctly.
Once you can conquer the computer set on insane AI you can head over to battle.net and try your hand at 1v1.
Learn the correct build orders for a given tactic. Know which buildings are going to give you which units and what upgrades you need for your chosen strat.

Protoss Unit Guide
Here’s an excellent Protoss unit guide built by GetJesse. It’s from the beta release but it still mostly applies. GetJesse goes into good detail on each unit, it’s abilities and available upgrades. He also talks about the differences between Starcraft 1 and Starcraft 2. Great Job.
